The metaphysical concept of alterity is subjected to deconstruction by Derrida, but remains crucial to his thinking of the trace, of differance, and of literature in their irreducibility and their foreignness to all presentation, essentiality, and identity; beyond that, alterity remains at the very heart of his attempt to think an ethics of hospitality, grounded as that ethics is in the value of the other. The relationship between literature and an ethics of alterity is also at the centre of recent commentaries on the postmodern.

Much later, after destructions of a kind even Benjamin would have been hard-pressed to imagine, Adorno will write of a reconciliation in which difference is preserved as a kind of non-antagonistic indifference: 'Reconcilement [Versohnung] would release the nonidentical, would rid it of coercion, including spiritualized coercion; it would open the road to the multiplicity of different things and strip dialectics of its power over them. Reconcilement would be the thought of the many as no 40 Beckett, Literature, and the Ethics of Alterity longer inimical, a thought that is anathema to subjective reason' (Adorno 1973, 6).

However, it is hardly coincidental that in translating this line as 'Gestuftes Babel von Arkaden' (Benjamin 1991, 57) Benjamin ignores his own principle of literality, tampering with the syntactical equivalence of staircases and arcades in Baudelaire's poem in order to privilege the latter by preserving its status as noun or name. The pure language itself is situated beyond all the antagonisms of historical difference: it is the 'realm of reconciliation and fulfillment of languages' (Versohnungs- und Er{Ullungsbereich der Sprachen).
