In the stomach the swallowed air floats as a bubble over the milk and should be allowed to be 'burped up' to avoid discomfort. Hence half way through a feed and also at the end of it, the baby is held over one's shoulder and the back rubbed lightly. In a few minutes the air bubble will find a way up and come out with a 'burp'. The procedure is referred to as 'burping the baby'. The baby may show signs of discomfort until he has burped and may continue to spit up small quantities of milk until burped.
