The truck creaks as I stoop over to reach under the counter for some packs of gum. I stand up and find a few candy rings in the corner, the sugar jewels gleaming through their cellophane. I put them back and go to start the truck up. Rosa ties her hair back into a ponytail and looks at me like she wants me to go away. I start the engine anyway. Rosa comes back inside, shutting the door, stomping toward the passenger seat. The guy follows her over. Rosa grabs her purse from the dashboard, taking out an eyebrow pencil.
While Amá was nearly psychic with Felix, she acted as if she knew nothing about Merced’s habits, and even now there are times when Hector wonders if he could have stopped her from turning a blind eye on her middle son, if this would have made a difference.
