At this point I would even settle for a dry leaf. But the streets of Kabul were just as dry and colourless as everywhere else. The only good thing was I was out of the house. Those hours away from being locked up with my sisters were special. Mum got a friend to look after my sisters. I didn’t know her, but Mum must have trusted her otherwise she wouldn’t have left Emily and Kate alone with her.
