It’s no big deal, it happens every week. But now imagine the same scene with a very different outcome. Let’s pick up the commentary. ‘They’re using the machine they call Delilah for the draw tonight, started by none other than a former member of Blondie. Here comes the first number and . . what are the chances of that? The first number is 1. OK, next choice, well would you believe it? Two. That’s incredible. And the third number’s coming through now. Hey, is this a joke? The third number is 3 . ’ And so it goes on until the draw is complete: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6.

You are in a small room that contains only a PC, a desk with three drawers, a bookcase and a candle. The bookcase has half a dozen thick reference books on it, and a couple of filing boxes. How would you hide the text in such a way that you could get the text back from its hidden form, yet no one else would be able to get to your secret? To make it more interesting, see if you can think of a way whereby you could put the concealed text on plain view, so anyone could see it without moving anything, but no one would realize they were seeing it.

This technique works by breaking you out of your usual way of seeing things. If, say, you were doing a project on supermarkets and wanted to design a whole new way of checking out, then you don’t want a picture of a regular supermarket checkout. The other reason for discarding an image is if the picture is practically empty. You want a reasonably rich picture with a fair amount of content. But otherwise stick with it. Don’t change it because it looks difficult. The odd ones are often the best. Let’s say I’ve done this exercise, and I chose the picture opposite at random.
