Example text

He was an older guy. They’d see I was up and coming and I would live with their stuff – their guns. I’d keep it under my pillow. One day I met a friend who was planning an armed robbery. We used to work together and do burglaries and stuff. He was out of his head taking drugs. He pulled out a Colt 45, and he pulled the trigger three or four times, and pointed it at my head. Little did I realise that it had a bullet in it. His eyes were red and he was laughing. That guy was older than me. However, when I realised there was a bullet in it, I went crazy at him.

After telling them there was some more cash in a wardrobe, he was dragged into the bedroom and they took what was there, still believing there was more to be found. Meanwhile, the man’s girlfriend was dragged into the kitchen where she lay on the floor while one of the men searched her, finding a £20 note. He then pulled out his penis. She pleaded with him not to rape her, but he was undeterred. After finishing with her, he pulled her to her feet and dragged her back to the living room where her hands were tied with flex.

But who were they and where were they going to strike next? The police needed help from the black communities in London, but that quarter was not inclined to cooperate, having suffered for years at police hands. There had been outrage about various deaths in custody, concerns about informers being allowed by their police handlers to commit violent crime, and most important, the death of black teenager, Stephen Lawrence. However, the Metropolitan Police (Met) was beginning to show the first signs of wanting to change, owning up to mistakes, and it was about to admit to institutional racism.
