The journalist Mona Eltahawy is not any stranger to controversy. via her articles and activities she has fought for the autonomy, safety, and dignity of Muslim girls, drawing vocal supporters and detractors. Now, in her first e-book, Headscarves and Hymens, Eltahawy has ready a definitive condemnation of the repressive forces-political, cultural, and religious-that lessen thousands of girls to second-class citizens.
Drawing on her years as a campaigner for and commentator on women's matters within the heart East, she explains that because the Arab Spring all started in 2010, girls within the Arab international have had revolutions to adopt: one fought along males opposed to oppressive regimes, and one other fought opposed to a complete political and financial system that represses girls in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, and different nations.
Eltahawy has traveled around the center East and North Africa, assembly with ladies and hearing their tales. Her ebook is a plea for outrage and motion, confronting a "toxic mixture of tradition and faith that few appear prepared or capable of disentangle lest they blaspheme or offend." A manifesto inspired by means of desire and fury in equivalent degree, Headscarves and Hymens is as illuminating because it is incendiary.

Leslie met with Danny’s teacher a week before school began. She said that Danny was “special,” and then explained how. The teacher insisted that she would not permit other children to give Danny a hard time, and her attitude was confident and reassuring. Leslie also talked to Danny, in order to prepare him. As delicately as she could, she suggested that Danny not talk to the other children about “girl stuff ” for the time being, that Danny shouldn’t bring dolls or girls’ toys to school.

Neither of them wished her to be different than she was. Mrs. Johnson brought up the subject of Amanda’s behavior with the surgeon the next time she saw him. He told her that it is common for girls like Amanda—that is, girls who were born boys—to have tomboyish traits. ” But he reassured her that girls like Amanda appear to adjust fine as girls. Mrs. Johnson wondered how certain he could be of this if he had only seen one other patient with cloacal exstrophy, but she didn’t want to appear difficult.
