The bishopric of Csanad was founded about 1030 and, as we have noted, that of Transylvania was created in the early years of the twelfth century. At the end of that century King Imre (1196-1204) founded the abbey of Kercz (Carta) on the Olt for Cistercian monks who had come to the monastery of Egres in 1179 from the senior community of Pontigny. The administrative and ecclesiastical developments reftect the progress made in colonising Transylvania. This was effected by a Hungarian advance eastwards along the Maros and Szamos (Some~) valleys in the west and north-west of Transylvania.

12 The chronicle then continues with John of Küküllo's text. In the intercalated passage concerning the period 1345-55 a paragraph describing an expedition against the Turks is of particular interest: 38 The Emergence 0/ Moldavia Item anno domini millesimo trecentesimo quadragesimo quinto, post coronacionem regis Lodovici tercio, circa festum Purificationis beate virginis Marie, Siculi cum paucis Hungaris, qui tune in medio eorum existebant, contra Tartaros procedentes deo auxiliante, innumerabilem multitudinem Tartarorum, in terra ipsorum in ore gladii percusserunt.

These remaining Tatars soon fled to the distant coastal areas to join other groups of Tatars. ] An approximate date and location for this expedition is provided by J. Podhradczky in his edition of the Chronicon Budense in which the same chapter is given the subtitle 'Tartari anno 1345 et 1346 duplici pugna in Moldavia victi' Y Yet even more precise details are given by the Chronicon Dubnicense. This chronicle reproduces the text of John of Küküllö relating to events of the reign of Louis but after chapter IV interposes an account of events during the period 1345-55 that is attributed by its editor M.
