4L family of K-series engines isn’t much different than those that preceded it. 4L K-series engines because of their increased horsepower ratings; however, their electronic, drive-by-wire throttle bodies, composite intake manifolds, and integrated exhaust manifolds should all be considered before settling on any one of them. 4L engines, though, which means interchanging cylinder heads for an earlier style one is entirely possible. K24Z3/K24Z7 Honda once again updated its K-series engine platform for the completely redesigned 2009 TSX and 2012 Civic Si.
Also known as a square design, such engine architectures are generally a good compromise between adequate low-end torque and sufficient top-end power. 4L engine’s over-square design, which features a longer stroke, results in more torque but at the expense of any additional top-end power. For reference, under-square engines such as the B16A typically produce impressive horsepower but lack torque. Apart from the clockwise rotation and 180-degree opposed orientation, one of the biggest changes implemented among K-series engines is the timing chain.
4L Accord or TSX intake manifolds, such as the RAA, can be used but typically aren’t sought after as replacements for anything else. Their long runners and small plenums result in respectable mid-range torque but weren’t designed to perform well at higher engine speeds. Composite intake manifolds, such as these, should be avoided. Under no circumstances are they the only option. For example, if using the RSX version of the K20A3, simply swap the cast-aluminum intake manifold from the 2002–2005 Civic Si version into place for a direct fit.
