This trick of expressing first person thought in third person narrative, in effect 'miming' the character, is called 'free indirect speech' and can be used for ironic effect. This is because the character's thoughts are put into a broader, more critical perspective. It's through the mediation of the narrator in this way that we enjoy Philip's farcical romanticism as he contemplates Lilia's possible transfiguration and compares her to the Goths. He is attempting to construct a dramatic narrative out of Lilia's journey and we know enough already to feel this is absurdly removed from the reality of the situation.
Well, by just thinking about four passages in a structured and methodical way, I think we have made significant progress. We know a lot more about Philip. In the first passage he had wondered if Lilia might not be 'transfigured' by her Italian experiences like 'the Goths', but in the fourth passage we have seen him 'transfigured' in a way unimaginable at the beginning of the novel.
