You need two, or possibly more, sentences after your summary to show you can see the poem's overall argument. In order to give some direction to the story you have just retold, it is a good idea to draw attention to the tension you have observed in the poem. Then, after this, you need to step back, and make some kind of indication of the larger issue you can see in the evidence you have presented. Let's look at how, following these guidelines, we might construct an opening paragraph about 'The Welsh Hill Country': In 'The Welsh Hill Country', the poet initially draws attention to sheep grazing.
But there seems to be something going on in the two lines about the rose that is rather more complex than the straightforwardly positive image of the day in the first stanza. For example, the word 'angry' in relation to the rose seems to jar. And we can see the complication in the second half of the stanza where, in talking about the root in its grave, Herbert begins to convey the sense that death is not just an enemy but entangled in the very being of the rose. What we see happening here is a not unfamiliar effect in poetry.
We suspect that it isn't a literal messenger, just as we suspect that the narrator in the poem isn't actually a prisoner. It is far more likely that she is talking about psychological feelings of being denied an independent existence. Again, then, we can see the larger issue in the specific example: the poem is likely to explore feelings of being repressed and restricted. But you might feel, even at this late stage in this chapter, that you could not make this much progress this quickly. You might feel that you could not move confidently from the sense of a tension to the larger issue involved.
