The generic terms ‘audio-visual aids’ and ‘presentation aids’ refer to all of these and to much else besides. Technically a visual aid lacks sound and an audio-visual aid includes sound; but this distinction is rarely maintained. Blackboards, whiteboards, flip charts, pieces of paper, prompt-cards, movies and tape-recorders all fit these generic categories.

Presenters can also use written text to encourage the audience to interact. For example, a presenter asks the audience something whilst hovering near to the whiteboard, pen in hand, inviting the audience to offer an input.
