In the final part of the chapter I turn to yet a different intellectual discourse. I examine the antimechanistic notions of “seeing” elaborated in German The Type and the Gaze 35 philosophy and history of art through the discussion of two books, one by sociologist and philosopher Georg Simmel and the other by historian of art Heinrich Wölfflin. If anthropometric genealogy lent prestige to the use of photography as a major scientific device in the study of race, the photographic study of the gaze was appropriated and further developed by Weimar and Nazi writers toward racial observation.

1933 was the critical year politically for every question on race, but the intellectual sphere is not the same as the political sphere, nor is its time line identical or parallel with the political one, although sometimes it is contiguous with it. In fact, most of the ideas discussed here were already around in the 1920s. But ideas are dependent on time and place, and under new conditions the same ideas become different ideas. Chronologically the book begins before the Weimar period, continues through Nazi Germany, and ends with the new Germany.

65 Contemporary observers note that the written text was unable to attain the same effect after the surge in visual material—images and pictures can revitalize and enhance a text in a split second. 66 The development of the ideas traced in this book forms an inseparable part of the history of such key philosophical concepts as Weltanschauung, perspec tive, and style, the development of all of which are inherently linked to the history of relativism. ”67 In this book I show how far Hayden White erred and point especially to the extent to which important relativist moments are essential for a conceptual and historical understanding of Nazi racial literature.
