Paisius Yaroslavov, one of the most attractive figures in Russian monastic history, first headed the Nonpossessors. Professed at a monastery near the White Lake beyond the Volga, Paisius quickly became known all over Russia for the saintliness of his life. 8 The grand duke wanted to reform the Holy Trinity monastery and to restore it to its former high spiritual level, but Paisius was to remain as head of the monastery for only three years (1479-1482).

Saint Joseph was well read, and he knew the Bible and the pa tristic writings particularly well. In The Enlightener alone he quoted more than forty Church Fathers, and Saint John Dama scene seems to have been his particular favorite. While he was an able logician and dialectian, Saint Joseph unfortunately lacked a critical approach to his sources.

It became im perative, therefore, to produce the entire Bible in the language of the people. Saint Gennadius, archbishop of Novgorod and chieP adversary of the Judaizers, undertook the task of translation. A surprisingly broad-minded man for his age, Gennadius did not hesitate to use the Latin Vulgate and the Jewish texts for his translation, which he finished in 1493. Gennadius' Bible incorpo rated the older Slavonic translations from the Greek New Testa ment and the Septuagint. Esther was translated from the He brew; and several books, such as Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Tobit, were translated from the Vulgate.
