One investigator [37] at first estimated that it would take children around 10 years to learn the simple cultural associations connected with body-build. Accordingly, he asked boys aged 10—20 years to look at photographs portraying fat, medium, and thin adult males and to give an indication of the character traits held by the different types. The results showed clearly that a common body-build stereotype exists in this age range. The medium, muscular build is associated with positively valued traits and behaviours, whereas the other two builds are assigned descriptions which are relatively unflattering.
