Anorexia leads to decreased oral intake, and the resultant malnutrition affects healing and immune function. If cachexia is present, the anabolism required for healing and immune function is further impaired.

Although reversible by successful treatment of the underlying disease, they are generally considered preterminal symptoms in palliative patients due to progression of disease. Asthenia is characterized by generalized weakness and profound physical and mental fatigue. 19 Cachexia is a catabolic process seen in many advanced illnesses, including end-stage organ failure (cardiac, lung, renal, and liver), AIDS, and lung and gastrointestinal cancer. Its effects are patient dependent, varying even among patients with similar tumour types and size.
