By adding of aluminum to the film systems the hardness can be increased and at the same time the Young's modulus reduced. Hardness values from 20-55 GPa have been reported with an aluminum content from 40-60%. Furthermore, the content of aluminum controls the structure of the coatings (hexagonal or cubic). At the aluminum ratio of more than 67 mol% the B1 cubic-type structure transformed to the B4 wurtzite-type structure.
