Each of his earlier books had already been reprinted at least once, if not twice. The Camera Craft issues containing his articles sold out on a regular basis. The time therefore seemed ripe for him to bring out a completely theoretical book that conveyed his ideology in distilled form. When it appeared in 1937, The Command to Look seemed timely in other ways as well. Only a year before, Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, which had inspired much of Mortensen’s rhetoric in Command, had become a runaway bestseller.
The impact of the images was greatly diminished due to their size, which was too small to convey many subtleties. ) In some print runs the reproductions were murky, making them even less impressive. Despite its physical shortcomings and poor critical reception, The Command to Look still managed to go through six printings between its first appearance in 1937 and its final printing in 1948. The sixth printing finally ran out in 1956, at which point the book was officially declared to be out-of-print.
