These assessments are carried out in primary care and require your trainer to observe a clinical interaction between you and a patient. This can either be achieved by collecting a series of videoed consultations, having your trainer sit in on your surgery, or both. Some training practices set aside specific clinics for these to be carried out, which enable you as the trainee to have more time to negotiate the video camera or have a feedback session with your trainer afterwards. Tip: Try and have your trainer sit in on your consultations as well as recording videos for your COTs.
Make sure that you consider your options wisely and if possible try to visit different surgeries to get a feel for the type of place where you would like to work. Some schemes put on an event where all of the training practices within the area set up their own stand to ‘tout for business’ (as it were) and provide trainees with further information on what experiences their practice can offer. You may also want to think about choosing a practice for ST3 that offers something different to that of the practice where you may be working in the earlier training years.
How do I apply? Stage 1 of the process is the online application which determines your eligibility and can only be submitted between the designated dates on the website. Applications outside of these designated dates will not be considered and, although it sounds obvious, you are only allowed to submit one application.
