I am delighted that 200 years after the papers were rediscovered at Petworth, Oxford University Press is at last able to publish some of Harriot’s mathematics. This edition offers, for the first time since 1632, a complete version of Harriot’s Treatise on equations, and in doing so will perhaps begin to fulfil the hopes held long ago by Lower, Torporley, Pell, Wallis and others: that Harriot should be established in his rightful place in the history of the evolution of algebra. A note on conventions adopted in preparing the text I have adhered as closely as possible to Harriot’s original notation and layout.
