The importance of these training activities at ‘‘the Bussey’’ to modern mammalian genetics can be more fully appreciated by studying the Castle ‘‘intellectual family tree’’ described by Morse (Morse, 1978), which documents four generations of his intellectual descendants.

Wilhelmina Francis Dunning (1904–1995) (Fig. 1-38) was born in Topsham, Maine. She joined Curtis and Bullock as a part-time student assistant in 1926. A. degree at the University of Maine and had been admitted as a graduate student with Thomas Hunt Morgan in Zoology at Columbia. She completed the doctoral program at Columbia in Genetics and Cytology in 1932, and elected to join Curtis and Bullock full time. Her major role initially was to analyze the large amount of data that Curtis and Bullock had accumulated on sarcoma induction in the several strains of rats.
