Caroline's feminist-sounding desire for a profession and her concern for girls similarly situated turn out to be based solely on the assumption that she will never marry. She wants work to take her mind off Robert Moore, and when at last he discovers that he Marriage, Morality and the Model Woman 43 loves her there is no more talk of governessing for her or general reform for spinsters.
