This is a pity, because mortuary rituals are one of the best ways to learn about the things that a group cherishes—its group beliefs, values, and worldview. Memorials: The Material Culture of Memory and Beliefs Archaeologists tend to equate the beginning of gravestone scholarship with the work of James Deetz and Edwin Dethlefsen, but before their studies, other scholars had already recognized the value of memorials as vehicles of cultural ideas.
