The Inner Castles were in the thick of the fighting on 18 March I 9 I 5, when the Allied navy attempted to force its way through the straits at the outset of the Gallipoli campaign. That assault was a total failure, with two British battleships and a French Dreadnought sunk by shore batteries and underwater mines, as well as two more battleships put out of action. A total of 2,750 Allied sailors lost their lives. But even before that attack the Allied high command had decided that the straits could not be forced by a fleet alone, and they had begun planning for a large-scale amphibious landing at the Aegean end of the Dardanelles, the main thrust to be made on the Gallipoli peninsula.

After crossing the Dardanelles again to Kum Kale, which in Turkish means Sand Castle, we could see the bomb-blasted ruins of the second of the two Outer Castles, standing on the sandy Asian promontory where the Dardanelles flows into the Aegean. We could not land there, Ahmet told us, without permission from the military authorities in Canakkale, and so we continued up the Asian shore. As we did so we had our first close-up view of the Trojan plain, which extends for miles inland between two streams that enter the Dardanelles together in a marshy estuary just to the east of Kum Kale.

When Richard Chandler visited the site in I 764 he found it completely deserted, and while looking at the ruins of a temple he was told that 'this had been lately a lurking-place of bandetti; who often lay concealed here . ' The first traveller to report the site inhabited was Lechevalier, who in I 78 5 found a few people living there in a tiny hamlet called Talian, a corruption of Dalyan, or Fish Weir. He and other travellers recorded that the ruins at Alexandria Troas were being used as a quarry by the Ottoman government, with ancient columns being shipped away for colonnades in the imperial mosques then being built in Istanbul; sarcophagi dragged off by the local villagers to be employed as basins in street fountains; and huge granite blocks ground down by the Turkish army to make stone cannon- THE WESTERN SHORES OF TURKEY balls.
