Within the first volumes of this paintings, Paul Ricoeur tested the kin among time and narrative in ancient writing, fiction, and theories of literature. This ultimate quantity, a complete reexamination and synthesis of the information constructed in volumes 1 and a pair of, stands as Ricoeur's so much entire and pleasing presentation of his personal philosophy.

Ricoeur's objective this is to explicate as absolutely as attainable the speculation that has ruled his inquiry, specifically, that the hassle of pondering at paintings in each narrative configuration is done in a refiguration of temporal adventure. To this finish, he units himself the vital activity of determing how some distance a poetics of narrative could be acknowledged to unravel the "aporias"—the uncertain or complicated elements—of time. leader between those aporias are the conflicts among the phenomenological experience of time (that skilled or lived via the person) and the cosmological feel (that defined through heritage and physics) at the one hand and the oneness or unitary nature of time at the different. In end, Ricoeur displays upon the inscrutability of time itself and makes an attempt to parent the bounds of his personal exam of narrative discourse.

"As in his prior works, Ricoeur labors as an imcomparable mediator of frequently estranged philosophical methods, continuously in a way that compromises neither rigor nor creativity."—Mark Kline Taylor, Christian Century

"In the midst of 2 opposing modern options—either to escape into ever extra important readings . . . or to retreat into ever extra secure readings . . . —Ricoeur's paintings deals another choice that's serious, wide-ranging, and conducive to new applications."—Mary Gerhart, Journal of Religion

Note: I'd say this can be simply the most very important books I've learn within the final decade. tricky studying, yet worth the persistence. Recommended.

Example text

Sometimes (as when, for instance, we are engaged in science) that interest may be purely cognitive: we want to know the truth about them, and to understand why they are the way they are, independently of any value which they may have for us. My pen, considered in this way, is seen solely as a black plastic object with a metallic tip. I may be interested in the constitution of the plastic of which it is made, which is the same as that of other plastic objects: through this knowledge, I may be able to understand how the plastic can be shaped into this kind of object, and differently shaped when it is made into, say, an ashtray.

And even without these reminders from quantum theory, we could have worked this out on purely philosophical grounds. Science, after all, depends on experience: it is an attempt to make some kind of rational sense of the world as we experience it. But experience is always someone’s: each of us, including scientists, 43 MERLEAU-PONTY: A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED must experience the world from his or her own point of view. The very notion of science as ‘empirical’ thus implies that scientists are situated within the world, not standing outside it in a detached or God-like position.

In that sense, the world is not purely my world, and the meanings of objects in it are meanings which I find, rather than meanings which I create. We return to the point already made. Perceiving is neither, as it is for the objectivist, passively receiving representations from objects; nor, as it is for philosophical idealists, creating the world from the ideas in my mind. The perceiver is in the world, but not in the same way that pure objects are: the perceiver is a subject who acts on the world as well as being acted upon by it.
