I have maintained an interest in cancer services. I was the first lead cancer GP in a lead cancer team in the UK, sponsored by Macmillan, and I now chair the Scottish Cancer Group. So I’ve been heavily involved with cancer service development. From my own career point of view, I think – I hope – that my many hospital experiences over the years have modified my approach to patients. I went through medical school and thoroughly enjoyed it, and carried on to … went to Glasgow to do some cancer research, met Joan who is my wife, and we got married very quickly.
Despite this it seems from her mother’s comments that the cessation of the regular health checks would leave them with no support and with feelings of insecurity. It is interesting that while Ruth experiences similar PTSD type triggers, from for example an unexpected TV programme, it was her mother who ‘reminded’ Ruth that this was the case when she was on her student placement in a hospital. It is also clear that she has avoided predictable triggers such as the survivors conference which instead of promising peer support in prospect made her fear precipitation into distress.
I think it [a self help group or support group for long-term survivors] would be quite good actually because … just because for the people that have been through the same thing as you … because one of the big things is feeling different to all your friends. I think it affected my mum a lot, the fact that they changed my doctor … the fact that we were going to someone different. Anne Well it’s not so much that Ruth, I think it was the fact that it was … it wasn’t made clear what was happening. And this five year check-up, I think for me, was a big thing.
