It is not possible here to survey the whole biblical literature on this question. But it may be worthwhile to look at one other story, the one that deals most explicitly with animalsthe story of Noah and his ark. This story, too, certainly indicates that God has concern for other species as well as human beings.
Further, the king himself may internalize the idea of these rights. The rights of the nobility may be initially granted by the king or won from him through confrontation. During the Enlightenment, thinkers sought to ground rights more objectively. They argued that human beings, or at least some of them, are endowed with rights by God or, when God-language seemed problematic, by nature. Certain rights resided intrinsically in individualsusually in adult males, often restricted to Europeans, and sometimes only to those possessing sufficient property.
One way to prevent this tendency toward absolutism is to avoid the language of rights altogether. One could simply ask in each instance what is the best course of action for all concerned. But to change the language in this way would be to sidestep many of the current debates. A second way, the way adopted in this book, is to accept the formulation in terms of rights and then to work against the individualism and absolutism so easily associated with it.
