Among those killed was Hauptmann Cramer. The Russian counterattacks went on. Several waves of Stuka divebomber attacks finally managed to pin down the enemy. Oktyabr was held. " Shenderovka - "Hell's Gate" Once again inside the pocket. The situation of the surrounded troops was coming to a head; events were beginning to overtake them. While the troops battled the Russians in the rain, mud and filth, the command staffs squatted in pitiful peasant cottages under enemy artillery fire. Under the light of flickering candles and tiny Hindenburg lamps they went about their work, planning, calculating, organizing, taking reports, issuing orders, directing and controlling.

To the rear in Shenderovka increasing numbers of rear-echelon units and their vehicles struggled through the confusion of the burning village, which was once again under fire. The Russians had broken through to the edge of the village. Once again they were turned back by the Wiking Division's 5th Panzer Regiment in a wild tank battle which saw both sides suffer heavy losses. Thirtytwo Russian tanks were destroyed; not a single one of the 5th Panzer Regiment's tanks returned. This sacrifice did, however, save the 57th and 88th Infantry Divisions which, as rearguard, were fighting bitterly and holding on.
