Particularly curious dogs will also ingest sewing needles and pins. If you suspect that your dog has ingested a sharp object you should take them to your veterinarian as soon as possible. If your dog ingests a sharp object with a string attached, such as a fishing hook or a sewing needle, it is always tempting to pull on the string if it is protruding from their mouth or anus. This is not a good idea. Pulling on such a string has the potential to cause internal injury and make the object far harder for a veterinarian to remove.
This is a legal requirement of owning pet dogs and involves implanting a tiny electronic identification device under the skin, usually around the neck area. Each microchip has a unique number, which is stored with your dog’s and your details at several central registers. Veterinarians and pounds can then identify your dog by waving a special microchip reader over your dog. It is vital that you keep these details current to avoid any problems contacting you if your dog is found. You should contact your local council to check or change these details.
Poisons such as snail and slug bait, rat and mouse bait and cockroach bait are sometimes advertised as ‘pet friendly’ or ‘pet safe’. In my experience these are sometimes still potentially harmful to dogs. You should store them away from dogs and seriously consider whether the risk is worth using them at all. This will be discussed further in Poisonings on page 62. Sticks Many dogs love chasing and fetching sticks. Unfortunately throwing sticks for your dog can sometimes be very dangerous. Occasionally sticks will land digging into the ground pointing towards your fast oncoming dog.
