Because pig manure is a low density nutrient fertiliser source, and costly to transport over long distances compared to inorganic fertilisers, areas with high intensity pig production usually have a surplus of nutrient manure. This has led to an increase in residual pig manure in the environment in these areas, where they can degrade water and air quality and impose human health and environmental pollution costs on society. 3). In pig farming areas the disposal of excess nutrients, principally nitrogen and phosphorus, from pig manure are among the principal causes of pollution of surface water (rivers and lakes), groundwater, and marine waters.
