A fruitful field is open for studies involving multiple deficiencies such as occur on the farm under varying conditions of feeding. Almost no experimental information is available on multiple deficiencies with the horse. Nutritional deficiencies may exist without the appearance of definite deficiency symptoms. These may be called borderline deficiencies. This results in horses which look normal in appearance but which are growing or performing at a lower and inefficient rate. In fact, many deficiency symptoms do not appear in an average- or low-producing group of horses until the farmer introduces superior breeding stock or improves feeding and management which causes performance to increase beyond a certain level.

The horse has a small stomach and requires frequent consumption of small quantities of feed. If fed too much feed at one time, labored breathing, rapid fatigue, colic, founder, and a ruptured stomach may occur. The horse has a large cecum which makes up about 40% of its digestive tract. The cecum, the horse's fermentation vat, has a microbial population which is similar to that of the cow. Most of the digestion of forages occurs in the cecum. Microbial action in the cecum produces volatile fatty acids, vitamins, and amino acids.
