The decline in progestagens at the end of gestation and the rise in prolactin leading up to parturition are probably the basis of the trigger for lactation to begin. The progestagen block on lactation is not absolute, highlighted by the fact that horses commonly show premature onset of lactation and leakage of milk prepartum, when circulating progestagen concentrations are still high. Also, if it were, simultaneous pregnancy and lactation would not be possible. Lactational anoestrus is not a feature of the mares reproductive physiology and follicular growth and ovulation resumes soon after parturition.
