When I first saw her, Memphis was a tiny puppy, about six weeks old and not quite eight pounds. She is white and black with many different colors of brown. Her ears are brown and soft, and she has fantastic eyeliner. I call her the Diva Dog. She was an adorable puppy, with a funny sideways way of looking at me, almost as if she was slightly suspicious. When Memphis was still very young, we left New York to work in Los Angeles. When we settled in there, Memphis played a big part in making me feel at home.

It must be a record, even for Alexis. She is definitely an ambassador for her breed. And her breed surely needs ambassadors. In many animal shelters simply being identified as a pit bull is a death sentence, even for puppies. A large percentage of dogs in shelters today are pit bulls. Drug dealers use them for protection and dogfight organizers train them to fight other dogs, often to the death. Dogs who are not considered good fighters are used as bait. Dogfighting in the United States is illegal, but because of the big money involved in betting it is hard to control.

We’re just thrilled that he’s happy now and happy with us. From what we have been able to piece together about his past, we think that he was on his own for over a year. Roscoe served as security system for a junkyard attached to an auto repair shop. We became friendly with the shop owner and got to know Roscoe. We used to bring him snacks all the time.
