Only the horse and possibly another human can teach you how to communicate with, and thus gain the cooperation of, a horse. A book can be a good place to start your journey of learning, however, especially if it is a good book on training (as you will discover, there are many books on the topic and not all of them give complete or accurate information). A good book is one that gives you: • A greater understanding of the journey you are on (or about to undertake), by giving you an overview of that journey, a context in which to place the various content that you will need to accumulate and acquaint yourself with on your road trip of learning • Definitions of the various learning levels and thoughts about how and when to advance your horse through each one • Ideas and tools for answering the questions and solving the problems that may arise for you and your horse, in each level So start your journey with a book.
To thoroughly understand why it is easier to move your limbs when your back is rounded, or up, you have to study the muscles of the body and how they interact with and move or inhibit movement in, the bones and joints. You can explore how a raised versus a hollow back can influence range of motion (movement), balance, and comfort in your horse by doing the following exercise. 1. On your hands and knees, position yourself like a horse who is standing squarely on four legs. 2. Lift your head up and back in the way a horse might who is traveling with his head in the air.
These individual lessons take time to communicate to the horse and for the horse to understand and become comfortable in executing. The horse must be taught to produce these behaviors, or gives, both while standing still and when in motion, which is another reason why this part of his education will take place over a longer period of time. Hurrying the responses in this stage will cause the horse to skip learning to give in some sections of his anatomy. These stuck places can make it easier for the horse to ignore his rider’s lateral requests at critical moments and/or will subtract from the beauty and quickness of an athletic performance because fluidity of movement can only come when the horse’s energy is allowed to move freely through his body without tension or stiffness.
