I have an older dog. Will his age affect how I should train him? As your dog becomes comfortable with a command, you should begin giving the command in a variety of situations. For example, practice the command in different rooms in the house. You can also vary how you give the command, such as saying the command while sitting or standing and giving the command when the dog is to your left and to your right. This will help your dog learn that the command means the same thing no matter where you are or what you are doing.

If you are using treats or toys as rewards for your dog, you should keep your rewards handy. For example, you may want to keep your rewards in a fanny pack so you can retrieve them quickly. CHAPTER 2: Positive Tip Dog Training Fundamentals When should I praise my dog? What should be my dog’s favorite life reward? You should only praise your dog when it is appropriate. If you overuse praise, the impact that praise will have on your dog will lessen with time. Similar to the frequency in which you give treats to your dog, you should only praise your dog when he has earned the attention.

Also, if he does not finish a meal, make sure that his food bowl is out of reach after his meal time so that he will not just graze all day long. If your dog's reward is kibble, remember to subtract what he eats as a reward from his food bowl so he does not consume too many calories during the day. Games • Toys such as rubber bones, tennis balls or stuffed animals are common toy rewards. You should watch your dog when he is playing to determine which toys are his favorites. • Playing a game with your dog is a great way to reward your dog for good work and to break up your training session.
