Food may be visualized in the esophagus. Aspiration pneumonia and gastric gas are sometimes evident in addition to esophageal dilation. Always take radiographs of the abdomen to exclude lower GI disease. Administer barium (10 mL/kg PO) to delineate the esophagus and to evaluate mural lesions, strictures, or obstructions (Fig. 3-4).
